Gout in children/teenagers

Gout in children/teenagers is usually caused by an underlying problem.

1. Inherited conditions that cause over- production of uric acid                                                                  .PRPP deficiency and PRPP synthetase overactivity. A;though uncommon these disorders are easily tested for.  These usually show  kidney stones containing high uric acid and signs of  gout.

2.Kidney disease resulting in decreased ability to rid itself of uric acid .                                                    .a. The most common type is due to mutations of the gene that makes a protein called romodulin.  Patients develop gout in their teenage years  and have slow worsening kidney failure over time.  There is usually a history of gout or kidney disease.                                                                              .b.  Another mutation of the gene is  that makes a protein called renin.  Here, children have a history of fairly low blood pressure, anemia and mild kidney disease.                                                             .c.  Although less common any other type of kidney disease can cause  gout in childhood.

3. Children who are overweight and who have high blood pressure can also be at risk of gout.  Usually occurring in the 20's or 30's but getting more common in younger individuals.  This is known as Metabolic Syndrome.
