Winter, Gout and Dehydration

Winter, Gout & Dehydration:

We tend to forget to drink water in winter due to the colder ambient temperature, but drinking quality filtered water even in winter is one of the keys to living gout free.
In many cases during winter months we are surrounded by heat pumps and heaters that dehydrate your body.
If you are taking GC pills for gout, make sure during the colder months you are still drinking at least 6 good sized glasses of quality filtered water per day. If you are exercising, you need to up that to around 6-10 glasses depending on your physical activity.
If you do exercise, ensure to keep a bottle of water on hand at all times and sip it regularly during your session to keep dehydration at bay. Many gout sufferers tend to suffer “gout aches” during prolonged training sessions especially if you train for over an hour at a time. Some people who don’t even get gout tend to complain of gout like symptoms “gout aches” after 2 hours of prolonged excise, or training for such events as marathons.
Although they taste good refrain from drinking sugary or electrolyte style drinks during exercise if you suffer from gout. Adding sugar to dehydration is a double wammy and could set you off into a gout attack, which you don’t want.

Undiagnosed Gout

Close to 90,000 men have been diagnosed in NZ.  But this is suspected to be a very small percentage of the real Gout sufferers, as many with symptoms such as foot pain, don't realize they have Gout.
